Curriculum Intent

Catholic Religious Education is the “core of the core curriculum” (Pope St John Paul II) and the foundation of the entire educational process.

St. Edmund’s Catholic school seeks to live out the values of Jesus Christ. Our school sees Religious Education as the Core and Foundation of the entire educational process.  Religious Education is fundamental to the purpose of St Edmund’s as our Christian faith informs all aspects of our life together. We provide an environment in which the children can grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith, developing their own relationship with Jesus. Our curriculum allows pupils to value and have the respect for the faith, belief and values of others. Each child is valued for who they are rather than for what they can do and every child is given equal opportunity for development to the highest potential.

We provide a Catholic curriculum, which is broad and balanced, recognising that every child is unique and is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

Our principal aim is that children leave St. Edmund’s with a wide range of happy and rich memories, formed through interesting and exciting experiences, driven through an engaging and comprehensive curriculum. We teach discrete lessons, based on National Curriculum objectives. We have meticulously designed, personalised and organised our curriculum to ensure that all children leave us with a wide, foundation of knowledge, the necessary skills to be successful, lifelong learners and a passionate curiosity about the world around them. Purposeful learning builds on prior learning. We provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities and strong pastoral support. We incorporate democratic principles, value the rule of law, support individual liberty and foster a community in which other faiths and beliefs are respected. Our curriculum is enhanced by our commitment to a values-based education (which includes British Values) and provide learning experiences that promote confident, self-motivated pupils, eager for lifelong learning.

Our curriculum supports the exploration of new skills and experiences, helping to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity.  We want all children to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes as part of the learning process, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others. This will help them to achieve, not only with us, but also in their future lives as adults. At Saint Edmund’s Catholic Primary, we know that children who have a positive attitude towards their learning will make good progress and be successful. Consequently, instilling all our pupils with a growth mind-set is a key priority for the school.

“No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.” Carol Dweck

Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare all children for the next stage of their education, but also for lifelong learning. Through our curriculum, we develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that are the building blocks for later life. We aim for academic excellence in the core areas and expect a large proportion of our Year 6 children to be leaving school working at the ‘greater depth’ level in reading, writing and maths.  Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but provides additional opportunities for children to find their passions and talents.

We are dedicated to encouraging all children to be passionate about reading and writing. It is our intention to immerse pupils in the wonders of quality texts, to instil a love for reading and writing, a passion for discovery and a confidence to explore their imagination. We aim to create life-long readers and writers.

“If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.”

Roald Dahl

Our Curriculum aims to:

  • To make children in their value and dignity the centre of every educational programme, in order to foster their distinctiveness, beauty and uniqueness, and their capacity for relationship with others and with the world around them.
  • To listen to the voices of children and young people to whom we pass on values and knowledge.
  • Understand the importance of family and community in the education of the children we educate.
  • Help the children to grow in the love of God.
  • Promote and respect the child’s innate capacity of wonder, awe, reverence, imagination, mystery and spirituality.
  • Expand the children’s positive attitudes of appreciation, reverence, care and respect for others and nature.
  • Foster the growth of each child’s individual talents and abilities of pupils to ensure that each child fulfils their full potential.
  • Encourage and inspire a love of life-long learning, investigation, curiosity, creativity and reflection.

We offer a curriculum that gives:

  • Defined curriculum drivers – reflecting our values, context and community
  • Universal entitlement to a knowledge rich curriculum
  • Equity for all our children to gain consistently high quality learning opportunities and experiences
  • Agreed pedagogical approaches in schools which underpin our curriculum to ensure there is ambition and challenge for all
  • meets the aims, purpose and objectives outlined in the National Curriculum for each subject
  • builds on prior knowledge and provides milestones that can be broken down into key stages of learning to enable secure assessment

“We consider education to be one of the most effective ways of making our world and history more human. Education is above all a matter of love and responsibility handed down from one generation to another”.  Pope Francis
