Gazelle Class - Year Three

Hello everyone and welcome to Gazelle Class,

My name is Mrs Johnson and I am the Gazelle Class teacher this year.  Mrs Scott will be teaching the class every Wednesday and Mrs Perrigo will be teaching for part of Tuesday afternoon. Please look at the Year 3 Curriculum document to find out what we will be learning this year.

If you have any questions or concerns please do contact me via the class email address Year3@st-edmunds-pri.wilts.sch.uk. I will endeavour to reply to you as soon as I am able to do so.

Mrs Johnson

Term 5

This term we will be historians and archaeologists investigating life in Roman Britain. We will be making comparisons with, and drawing on our knowledge of, the Iron Age to think about the legacy that the Romans left behind. We will also be drawing on the Romans for inspiration as we design and make our own mosaics during our Art lessons. In Science we continue our work as botanists as we learn more about the wonderful world of plants. In RE we will be celebrating Easter, reflecting on the resurrection and how the disciples reacted when Jesus appeared to them. We will continue to develop our computing skills as we find out more about stop frame animation and in PE we will be developing our cricketing and swimming skills.

Please take a look at the newsletter for Term 5 and the long term plan to find out more about the exciting learning that we have planned.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

READING

Each child will be given 1 or 2 books to take home and read. Books bags should be brought into school on a Monday and/or a Thursday for books to be changed. Rereading books is important to develop fluency and comprehension, so please encourage your child to read their book more than once. When reading with an adult in school, we will be using school books and keeping a separate reading record. Children therefore only need to bring their book bags to school when they need their reading book to be changed.

SPELLING

We have introduced a new spelling scheme to help us improve the standard of spelling across the school. Spellings will now be taught through investigations and a range of short focused activities which are all matched to the national curriculum. The children will be given five personal spellings (their focus five) and they are supported to use these in their written work in all subject areas. As soon as they have shown they are able to use a spelling, it is replaced with a new one. This new way of teaching spelling replaces the weekly whole class spelling test, weekly spelling lists will not, therefore, be sent home.

We would ask that you use the time at home to read regularly with your child and help them to practice their times tables. Your child has a personal login for Times Tables Rockstars to help them to do this.

PE

PE will take place on a Tuesday (cricket) and Friday (swimming). Please send your child to school in their PE kits on Tuesdays and with their swimming kit on Fridays. In line with school policy, earrings must be removed for PE lessons.

FOREST SCHOOL

We are delighted to be able to introduce Forest Schools sessions for all children at Saint Edmund’s. Once a fortnight, children will spend the afternoon learning a variety of skills outside, which will benefit and add value to their learning within the classroom. Please ensure that your child is wearing full school uniform, has a waterproof coat and/or sunhat and wellies in school for these sessions as they will take place whatever the weather. Our forest school sessions this term will be on Wednesday 4th May and Wednesday 18th May.
