Gazelle Class - Year Three

Hello everyone and welcome to Gazelle Class,

My name is Mrs Johnson and I am the Gazelle Class teacher this year.  Mrs Humphrey will be teaching the class every Wednesday and Mrs Perrigo will be teaching for part of Tuesday afternoon. Please look at the Year 3 Curriculum document to find out what we will be learning this year.

If you have any questions or concerns please do contact me via the class email address Year3@st-edmunds-pri.wilts.sch.uk. I will endeavour to reply to you as soon as I am able to do so.

Mrs Johnson

Term 2

This term we will be building on the history unit that we started last term exploring the world of Ancient Egypt. We will be investigating the question 'What did the Egyptians achieve?' by finding out more about this ancient civilization. We are adopting a cross-curricular approach which will enable us to build on our skills in history, geography, art, dance and computing as well as providing lots of opportunities to collaborate with others. In Science we will be investigating forces and magnets. We will be comparing how things move on different surfaces and observing how not all forces need contact between two objects. In RE we will start our term with our 'Prayers, Saints and Feasts' unit. During this time we will find out more about the Sacrament of Reconcilation and the life of Saint Francis. Towards the end of term we will be thinking about Advent and the importance of preparing our hearts for Christmas, learning from the example of Mary as she accepted her vocation.

Please take a look at the Term 2 newsletter and long term plan for more information about the exciting things we will be learning.

Each child will be given 1 or 2 books to take home and read. Books bags should be brought into school on a Monday and/or a Thursday for books to be changed. Rereading books is important to develop fluency and comprehension, so please encourage your child to read their book more than once. When reading with an adult in school, we will be using school books and keeping a separate reading record. Children therefore only need to bring their book bags to school when they need their reading book to be changed.

We have introduced a new spelling scheme to help us improve the standard of spelling across the school. Spellings will now be taught through investigations and a range of short focused activities which are all matched to the national curriculum. The children will be given five personal spellings (their focus five) and they are supported to use these in their written work in all subject areas. As soon as they have shown they are able to use a spelling, it is replaced with a new one. This new way of teaching spelling replaces the weekly whole class spelling test, weekly spelling lists will not, therefore, be sent home.

We would ask that you use the time at home to read regularly with your child and help them to practice their times tables. Your child has a personal login for Times Tables Rockstars to help them to do this.

PE will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday and will take place outside whenever possible. Please send your child to school in their PE kits on these days. They will wear their PE clothes all day. In line with school policy, earrings must be removed for PE lessons.

We are delighted to be able to introduce Forest Schools sessions for all children at Saint Edmund’s. Once a fortnight, children will spend the afternoon learning a variety of skills outside, which will benefit and add value to their learning within the classroom. Please ensure that your child is wearing full school uniform, has a waterproof coat and wellies in school for these sessions as they will take place whatever the weather. Our forest school sessions this term will be on Thursday 4th November, Monday 15th November and Monday 29th November.
